One of my biggest concerns before coming to Tokyo was the fact that I would be completely surrounded by concrete, and isolated from nature. I grew up in a market town with the countryside on my doorstep, and in the past have found myself overwhelmed in cities and their entirely mechanical noises.
Yet this city has a wildlife of its own - insects, birds, and the family of stray cats with kittens that scavenge for food from our bins.
And of course, the roaches in the kitchen.
